Some people giggle over their horoscopes once in a while, while others faithfully check them on the daily. Whether it’s to check for compatibility or one’s future, it’s needless to say that many have read these predictions at least once in their lifetime. Yet, many have trouble understanding it.

“I find Astrology very confusing. I can’t comprehend how it all connects with the stars and our personalities. Is there any science to prove it?” commented Leyden student Evelyn Bolanos conveying that the universe is truly beyond comprehension.

Babylonian Astrologers mapping the stars

The Beginning

The sky is one of the many things in the world that humans have searched for answers over the years. The Babylonians were the first people to apply myths to constellations and create the concept of the zodiac more than 2,000 years ago.

The shaping of astrology to its modern form then took place around the 4th century B.C. as the Greeks began to make significant advances in the fields of mathematics, and philosophy. Sooner astrology was embraced by the Romans, Arabs, and many more, spreading throughout the entire world.

 The Zodiac

The signs of the zodiac have existed for many years and are believed to reveal a person’s characteristics and talents. The Zodiac is the ring of constellations that the Sun seems to pass through each year as the Earth orbits around it. While there are 12 astrological constellations of the zodiac, there are 13 astronomical zodiac constellations, and 88 constellations covering the entire sky.

“My zodiac sign is Virgo, and I must say that the personality traits given to a Virgo perfectly describe me. I can always find some sort of truth behind my zodiac sign” mentioned Leyden student Rob Gomez.

Science teacher Dr. Veltman further explains that “Many don’t realize a sign is supposed to be determined by the position of the constellations in relation to the sun on the day you were born. Your actual sign should be shifted by a month. If you think you’re a Gemini, you’re actually a Taurus.”

Tarot Card Reading

Horoscopes

A horoscope is an astrological chart of a person or a moment in time, calculated from the planetary positions in either the sidereal or tropical Zodiac.

These calculations are based on the date, place and time of birth, therefore making one’s horoscope seem so personal, like a fingerprint. Just like a tarot reader who interprets tarot cards to look into someone’s past, present, or future, an astrologer can interpret this chart to make predictions that reveal personality insights and current trends that will affect individuals.

Leyden senior student Giselle Aguilar who once underwent a tarot card reading said, “I read my horoscope quite often, and surprisingly it does give me some advice that I use in my current life situations.”

Real or Fake?

Astrology has no scientific validity, and therefore it’s considered pseudoscience. Meaning it’s a belief mistakenly interpreted as being based on science.

However, while many regard astrology to be full of nonsense, others are willing to acknowledge that it can provide a deeper understanding of the human being.

“I don’t believe the positions of the stars at any point in time determine your future or personality. Of course, It’s fun to throw around, but it’s not real” said Dr. Veltman who’s an Aries himself.

According to the National Science Foundation, only 55% of Americans think astrology isn’t scientific at all. And approximately 40% think it is.

“If someone wanted to be an astrologer, I would tell them that they should study astronomy instead. Astronomy is real and you make a living, you also help people by making them understand more about the universe. On the other hand, astrologists are letting people off the hook for their own decisions. I rather have you take a job that’s rooted in rational sense” stated Dr. Veltman.
